Levon Helm, key member of The Band, dies at 71

ALBANY, N.Y.: Levon Helm, The Band’s commanding drummer and singer, whose solid beat and Arkansas twang helped define classics from the tragic “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” to the playful “Up on Cripple Creek,” died Thursday. He was 71.

Storied musician and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dr. JohnMac Rebennackreleases Locked Down, a startling album that marks a significant departure from his recent efforts. The new album, produced by The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, is an entirely new approach for the iconic Dr. John, featuring as it does his collaboration with Auerbach and a band of young musicians Auerbach hand-picked to make Locked Down at his Nashville studio.

Malcolm John “Mac” Rebennack Jr., better known as rock hall inductee Dr. John, has been a constant in the pop world for much of his 50-plus-year career. His biggest hit, the funky Top 20 hit Right Place, Wrong Time, was released in 1973 but he’s been consistently cranking out an album every few years since 1968.
