On Saturday night, my lovely wife and I trekked to downtown Akron for an engagement party (congrats, Doug and LeAnne!) and wound up checking out a sizable chunk of the This Is Akron showcase at Musica. Unfortunately, I committed a double transgression as both a Morehouse Man and a professional journalist and brought no writing utensil, causing me to rely on my sieve-like, short-term memory, so please forgive the generalities, but I hope you’ll get the drift.

Soul Train creator and host, television pioneer Don Cornelius dead at 75

This is sad. For anyone who spent their Saturday mornings watching Soul Train, as I did growing up, Don Cornelius was one of the coolest cats on television. His legacy as an African-American television pioneer cannot be overstated. R.I.P. From the L.A. Times "Soul Train" creator Don Cornelius was found dead at his Sherman Oaks…

Judas Priest to release Ripper-less "The Complete Albums Collection" box set

Hmmm, I don't know. If I'm Tim "Ripper" Owens, I think I'm a little bit offended that my four albums worth of contributions to the J.P. canon [Jugulator (1997), '98 Live Meltdown (1998), Demolition (2001), Live in London (2003)] are being summarily ignored…As if the band did nothing between 1990-2005. I hope he at least…

Stone Soul Ball is Saturday at Akron Urban League

One of the common complaints among area musicians is that there are few places for them to display their musical wares. Clubs come and go and some talent bookers and owners are easier to work with than others, making regular gigging a difficult prospect. But one local musician has been scheduling, promoting and organizing his…
