NEO Roller Derby Breast Cancer Awareness bout and bust auction

Greater Akron’s first and finest women’s flat track roller derby league, NEO Roller Derby, is already halfway through their 2011 home season at the Summit County Fairgrounds’ main arena. This, the league’s fourth season, has been very important for the league. Not only have they almost doubled their skaters’ ranks, but this is their first year as a member league of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the governing body of women’s flat track roller derby.

The league’s primary focus has always been giving back to the local community with special attention to organizations that help women and children. On Sept. 17, NEO will give back through their annual “Bust Bout“ Save the Ta-Ta‘s, designed to raise awareness and funds to benefit those affected by breast cancer. The proceeds from the bout will be donated to Stewarts Caring Place in Akron, Ohio. The bout will have special Breast Cancer Awareness Basket Raffles and will feature the third annual Bust Auction. NEO Roller Derby skaters have had their busts cast in plaster, and local artists have decorated the casts to be auctioned off. The decorated busts are currently available to be viewed at Studio 2091 at 2091 Front Street in Cuyahoga Falls until July 31. Following that, they will be on display at We Gallery at 20 North High Street in Akron From Sept. 5-16.

The double-header bout and bust auction will take place on Sept. 17 at the Summit County Fairgrounds Arena. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the first bout will begin at 6 p.m. We offer bleacher style seating for optimum viewing as well as trackside “suicide” floor seating for 18 years and older. We have an onsite snack concession, beer for the adults, children’s activities at halftime and a merchandise booth to purchase your favorite NEO Roller Derby apparel. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door, and can be purchased online at “http://www.neorollerderby.com/” or from any of a number of local businesses that have tickets available for purchase(a list is available on the website.) As always, kids 12 and under are admitted FREE.

We hope you will join us for this very special event- breast cancer is a serious issue that affects many women and their families each year. Together we can make a difference for those affected or struggling with this disease in our local community.
